The Jardin du Luxembourg has a special place in Parisians’ hearts. Napoléon dedicated the gardens to the children of Paris, and many residents spent their childhood prodding little wooden sailboats with long sticks on the octagonal pond, watching puppet shows, and riding the carousel or ponies.

All those activities are still here today, as are modern playgrounds and sporting and games venues.

History
The Jardin du Luxembourg’s history stretches further back than Napoléon’s dedication. The gardens are a backdrop to the Palais du Luxembourg, built in the 1620s for Marie de Médici, Henri IV’s consort, to assuage her longing for the Pitti Palace in Florence. The Palais is now home to the French Senate, which, in addition to parliamentary-assembly activities like voting on legislation, is charged with promoting the palace and its gardens.

Numerous overhauls over the centuries have given the Jardin du Luxembourg a blend of traditional French- and English-style gardens that is unique in Paris.

Grand Bassin
All ages love the octagonal Grand Bassin, a serene ornamental pond where adults can lounge and kids can play with 1920s toy sailboats (LocationTicket Price: sailboat rental per 30min €4; Operating Hours: 11am-6pm Apr-Oct; Metro: Notre Dame des Champs, RER Luxembourg). Nearby, littlies can take pony rides (Location; Contact: 06 07 32 53 95; Website: www.animaponey.com; Fee: 600m/900m pony ride €6/8.50; Operating Hours: 3-6pm Wed, Sat, Sun & school holidays) or romp around the playgrounds (LocationTicket Price: adult/child €1.50/2.50; Operating Hours: hours vary) – the green half is for kids aged seven to 12 years, the blue half for under-sevens.

Puppet Shows
You don’t have to be a kid or speak French to be delighted by marionette shows, which have entertained audiences in France since the Middle Ages. The lively puppets perform in the little Théâtre du Luxembourg (Location; Contact: 01 43 29 50 97; Website: www.marionnettesduluxembourg.fr; Ticket Price: €6.40; Operating Hours: Wed, Sat & Sun, daily during school holidays; Metro: Notre Dame des Champs). Show times can vary; check the program online and arrive half an hour ahead.

Orchards
Dozens of apple varieties grow in the orchards (Location; Metro: Notre Dame des Champs or RER Luxembourg) in the gardens’ south. Bees have produced honey in the nearby apiary, the Rucher du Luxembourg (Location), since the 19th century. The annual Fête du Miel (Honey Festival) offers two days of tasting and buying its sweet harvest around late September in the ornate Pavillon Davioud (Location; 55bis rue d’Assas, 6e).

Palais du Luxembourg
The Palais du Luxembourg (Location; Website: www.senat.fr; Address: rue de Vaugirard, 6e; Metro: Mabillon, RER Luxembourg) was built in the 1620s and has been home to the Sénat (French Senate) since 1958. It’s occasionally open for visits by guided tour. East of the palace is the ornate, Italianate Fontaine des Médici (Location), built in 1630. During Baron Haussmann’s 19th-century reshaping of the roads, the fountain was moved 30m, and the pond and dramatic statues of the giant bronze Polyphemus discovering the white-marble lovers Acis and Galatea were added.

Musée du Luxembourg
Prestigious temporary art exhibitions, such as Cézanne et Paris, take place in the beautiful Musée du Luxembourg (Location; Contact: 01 40 13 62 00; Website: www.museeduluxembourg.fr; Address: 19 rue de Vaugirard, 6e; Ticket Price: most exhibitions €13; Operating Hours: 10.30am-7pm Sat-Thu, to 10pm Fri; Metro: St-Sulpice, RER Luxembourg). Around the back of the museum, lemon and orange trees, palms, grenadiers and oleanders shelter from the cold in the palace’s orangery (Location).
